Inelegant Solutions: Why I Don’t Play WOW (or other MMOs)

  • Rob Scott · 1 year ago
This is an article I was going to write but don't have to! Great work. I don't have time to play games at all any more - I borrowed one for a weekend a few weeks ago and played for precisely fifteen minutes before getting called away to do some server maintenence...

WOW is well out of range - and has a business model comparable to that gym membership I'll soon be handing back because I don't have time to go!

The gym membership comparison is a very good one. I like that. I have to wonder how many of the 11 million subscribers sign in every month. I would doubt many. I'd wager, like you, most are paying for the membership out of habit or to preserve their characters if they decide to get back into it later. After all, their own numbers only count those who are paying the bills on time.

I think you should write your article. I'd love to read it. Your experience with the game sounds pretty much how I envision mine going. Fifteen minutes to maybe an hour of play before something else comes up.

At least Newgrounds doesn't charge me a monthly fee...

You're not alone. Lots of folks feel the same way for these and other reasons. Proof:

Glad to know I'm not alone in this one.

Great link BTW. Some very funny (and scary) videos.

I know I'm writing this a year late - but just came across this article. Spot on.

Thought I'd add one thing: The people on the gaming forums for MMORPGs are all too often total a-holes, too. Especially if you ask a question. I went onto a few mmorpg forums, asking questions to research the policies of each game, for example, on whether they were going to switch to Microtransactions. You wouldn't believe the amount of word twisting venom I encountered, just from asking honest questions.
They either have people working for the companies to smear people like me in favor of the company, or complete addicted brown-nosers.

I also made the decision never to play mmos again. Hopefully more people with brains will start to wake up and leave them. That industry needs to suffer - ...but sadly, it probably never will, because there are enough stupid people in the world with no morals or standards who just want their fix.
