In addition I need to say that I regret that Mailplane still makes me grab the browser for a mobileme account that it cannot access...

Mailplane is nice, but way overpriced. For a $10 I would not hesitate, now I am moving away. The browser itself isn't that bad anyway ;-) Too bad for the Mailplane developers. IMHO they'd better be fair and collect a small amount from many people, adding up to a substantial amount.

PS: like the author I am pay for my software, as should everybody. However, I like to get value for money. Mailplane does offer a lot, but not value for money.

Re: How to Scare People: A Practical Guide

coolio

Re: How to Scare People: A Practical Guide

I worked at two haunted houses and scaring people really gets my blood going. I think that timing is the most perfect thing to scare the hell out of somebody. I have a chainsaw at Barrets Haunted Mansion in Massachussets and i had a kid go on his knees and start balling his eyes out. It was pretty fun.

Re: Why I Don’t Play WOW (or other MMOs)

I know I'm writing this a year late - but just came across this article. Spot on.

Thought I'd add one thing: The people on the gaming forums for MMORPGs are all too often total a-holes, too. Especially if you ask a question. I went onto a few mmorpg forums, asking questions to research the policies of each game, for example, on whether they were going to switch to Microtransactions. You wouldn't believe the amount of word twisting venom I encountered, just from asking honest questions.
They either have people working for the companies to smear people like me in favor of the company, or complete addicted brown-nosers.

I also made the decision never to play mmos again. Hopefully more people with brains will start to wake up and leave them. That industry needs to suffer - ...but sadly, it probably never will, because there are enough stupid people in the world with no morals or standards who just want their fix.

Re: MailPlane: Not Worth the Price

You're cheap. I find using the mighty mouse extremely frustrating, especially the issue with the right-click. What I found is that if I lift my index finger (usually resting on the left mouse button area) COMPLETELY off the mouse, I can pretty well click anywhere in the right quadrant and get a right mouse click. It's only when I still have my left index finger resting on the mouse that I need to move to the extreme upper right on the mighty mouse for my right click to register.

Re: Safari’s New Interface: A Shiny Mess

I am using Safari 4.0.3 and there is no 'tab on top'. Instead the tabs remain at the red box you highlighted in the first image. The one thing that I hate about Safari is the difficulty to find the reload button. Apart from that, everything else works fine for me but I would stick to Firefox, if I were to choose only one browser to use for life. Safari is like a reserve for me, just like Opera but I definitely won't use IE (no matter what versions). I am experimenting with Flock but although Flock is based on Firefox, something is not right, yet.

Re: Seeking Better Email

I use Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail! Of course I love Gmail the most and pair it with Thunderbird, it seems to be a perfect combination. Although I like Gmail, I don't really like to check email within Gmail itself. I prefer to use POP3 and check through Thunderbird. Maybe I am used to it and it is now becoming a habit.

Speaking about Gmail labs, I have to use one that allows us to put the signature above all instead at the bottom. It is very difficult to reply to emails with the signature at the bottom.

Re: MailPlane: Not Worth the Price

A bit late to the party here, but just found out about this program...

I was a bit shocked at the $25 price, considering it's more or less a skin, but the ability to switch between different accounts and drag/drop attachments made it worth the price to me. Options for screen shots are very nice too.

Of course, I am using it for business. Do a lot of graphic stuff and deal with a lot of workers, so the screen shots come in handy for me more than most maybe... I agree with you that it is probably the best of these gadget inventions yet! I find it the best solution for me. I've tried other cell phone holders that even though you can hang them on your purse or belt I can't get the phone 'out' in time to get the call! I love the hook on my dash and I don't mind the look at all as it works well. As far as the light, yes it hurts my arthritic thumbs but I discovered not to use the end of my thumb but rather lay the whole thumb on it sideways and no problem. Do we really need the light? I even forced myself to try Safari 4 for some time, but I couldn't stand the barely readable tabs. I'm a bit late to this parade (three months late, in fact), but I found this post while searching other information, and just had to post. ;-)

I've been using Omniweb almost exclusively since 5.4. Like you, I played with the demos and then the betas, constantly upgrading, but not paying, but finally, one day, I realized that Omni was the browser for me, and worth my money, so I paid, and put the others on the "shelf." I use most of Omniweb's unique features regularly, and the ones I use the least, I use no less than once a week.

I suspect that what you have done in your comments, is project your own needs and desires for a browser onto the entire market. Omni may not have been compelling for you, but for a good number of people, it _is_ compelling. Also, I've been delighted to see Omniweb getting a fair number of updates in the months since they made it free. I have decided to stick with 5.9.1, due to Webkit issues in Gmail, but the sneaky peaks are fun to play with. ;-) I wouldn't give up on Omniweb just yet.

Since I suspect you will ask, I'll try to tell you what about OW compels me to use it.

1. Tabs. I do so much prefer the tabs on the side. For one, they are always a consistent size, and not dynamically changing all the time, causing me to accidently close a tab I merely meant to click on (as happens to me all the time in Safari and Firefox, and all the rest--I can't believe this doesn't irritate other people like it does me). Also, I can see more on the screen than with top-tabs (and if I turn off the icons, I can get a _huge_ number on-screen)

2. The flexibility of the tabs, moving, double-click to open in a new window, drag tabs between windows, etc. OK, most other browsers have added these features--but Omni had it first. ;-)

3. Workspaces. I have workspaces for certain kinds of works and subjects. It's great! I use this far too much. ;-)

4. Site-specific preferences. Granted, this one may seem silly at first, but I have a couple web sites, where I have set their downloads to other, specific locations. Also, I prefer a couple web sites to show me all their ads, and others, none. I have also added/changed the CSS for a couple sites I frequent. All of this is possible _only_ in Omniweb, and Omni makes it quite brainless to implement. I may not use all the site-specific preferences for the bulk of my pages, but when I have it, it is a great blessing. :-) Trust me, once you start using it, and seeing the potential, you will find more and more uses for it--at least I did.

5. Built-in source editing, and a gorgeous item inspector. Love 'em! Don't use them as often as the other features, but when I need them, they are life-savers.

6. And one feature I am using currently, and use so much, I forgot it was a feature. ;-) Popping out text entry fields into a separate window. You get used to that, and forget it may not be normal. ;-)

So, as you can see, there are compelling reasons for some/many people. :-) BTW, the "crashing" issue for Omni--not so much a show stopper as I originally thought. 5.9 is very stable, and besides that, Omni crashes as elegantly as you could hope a program to crash. Relaunch, and you are right where you left off. I don't remember ever losing work due to an Omni crash, yet other browsers frequently have let me down on that front--and yes, as you said, they _all_ crash. :-)

Well, that's my .02‹ worth (a little inflated, maybe)

-Jon

Re: Nine Reasons Every Eee PC User Should Get Easy Peasy

I bought my EEE PC900 with Windows XP installed and I hated it. You are absolutely correct in your review (which I didn't read ahead of time).

The "light" is useless and it is certainly dorky, but it is exactly what I needed! I have the G-1 phone and it is big and heavy. The regular clip which came with the Body Glove I put on the phone kept the it from hanging right - it's top heavy. Also, it was unbelievably hard to get unhooked and I missed calls all the time. With the "Smart Clip" I can hang it on my belt loop or purse. Of course, I had to put it on upside down in order to be able to use my camera so mine comes off the bottom, not the top, but I can live with that.

I'm glad I got it and it works for me!

Re: Why I Don’t Play WOW (or other MMOs)

Glad to know I'm not alone in this one.

Great link BTW.
